Customer Reviews
I have to start by responding to the last writer saying that BMW is a British car. Yes, it is true that it once was British and that it is British Motor Works (the name). However, the company was bought out by a German company and the cars have been German for many years now. It only started British and the name was kept. The company originally made planes, especially during World War 3. Hence the BMW emblem, which is meant to portray propellers spinning. History lesson over, I must say that the IS series from Lexus is a marvelous one. I love the styling, reliability, overall fit and finish, quality, features, interior, high end feel, and status it carries. However, there are other cars one could consider that have very similar performance and nearly equally excellent reliability for a lot less money. Case in point, the Subaru Legacy GT Limited. While that car does not carry the same snobbery appeal that a Lexus IS might, its 0-60 and top end performance are on par at 0-60 in 5.6 seconds with the manual. It has the five speed sportshift steering wheel mounted automatic system and a 250 horsepower turbo 2.5 engine. It is a lighter weight car, thus excellent performance. The interior is nearly as luxurious as the Lexus (though not quite) and it has an awesome gauge package that gives chills. Also, the Subaru's all wheel drive system is second to none, the best anywhere. Subaru in general has much higher performance aspirations than Lexus. Lexus has the luxury thing on them, but only by a bit. Mostly, Lexus has a name that people recognize and love. Subaru is still trying to refashion their image. I know of people that own both a Porsche 911 Turbo and a Subaru WRX STI and enjoy driving the Subaru just as much. The performance is so close its scary according to them and the price difference is about $80,000! That says something. All that being said, if money is no object I would take the Lexus IS with the 3.5 liter 306 horse motor over nearly any car in its class. However, given the price difference, I have to give the Lexus only four out of 5 stars for value.
